Tesla (TSLA) has had a rough 2026. The stock is down about 20% year-to-date (YTD), falling from $458.34 on the first trading day of the year to $297.38 in late July. That is a decline of more than 27% from peak to trough.

Its much-publicized Cybercab launch also disappointed investors. Tesla launched the robotaxi service in Austin on Sept. 3 with only 45 vehicles registered in Texas. The stock then dropped nearly 6% the next day, wiping out its 5.4% pre-launch gain, after federal safety regulators opened an audit into about 1,000 steering-wheel-free vehicles. Tesla's Model Y-based driverless ride service is still limited to seven U.S. metro areas.

Against that backdrop, Tesla's quieter move into Vietnam may matter more over time. On Sept. 11, Tesla registered Tesla Motors Vietnam Limited Liability Company in Ho Chi Minh City.

The unit is licensed to import, distribute, and sell vehicles and parts. There is no sign of a local factory yet, so this looks like a sales and distribution setup for now. Still, it gives Tesla its first formal presence in one of Southeast Asia's faster-growing EV markets. The question is whether a $3 million sales operation can make a real difference in a market led by a local EV maker.

But is a $3 million sales office in a market already dominated by a homegrown EV champion anything more than a footnote in Tesla's international growth story? Let's take a closer look.

The Promise and Limits of Vietnam

Tesla is starting in Vietnam with paperwork, not a full vehicle launch. Tesla's Ho Chi Minh City-based Vietnam branch was seeded with 77.667 billion dong, or about $3 million, in charter capital. It can import, distribute, and sell vehicles, parts, machinery, and equipment. However, Tesla has not said when sales will begin, what its vehicles will cost, or whether it plans to build local factories, showrooms, service centers, or charging stations.

Vietnam's EV market is growing. The country wants electric vehicles to make up one-third of all cars by 2030, and Ho Chi Minh City plans to replace 400,000 gasoline motorbikes with electric options by 2028. VinFast (VFS) is already the clear local leader. Its Vietnam EV deliveries rose 53% year-over-year (YoY) in Q1 2026, showing that demand is picking up.
