How we quote
A plain description of what our newsroom does with other people's journalism.
Two kinds of story
Every source we carry is handled in one of two ways, and each story on the site says which.
Headline and quotation
The default, and what almost every commercial publisher gets. We store the headline, the publisher's own summary trimmed to a short quotation, the byline and the timestamp. The article itself stays where it was published: the link takes you to the publisher's page, where their advertising, subscription and analytics apply — as they should.
Full text
A small number of sources are reproduced here in full, with their photographs stored on our own servers. We only do this where we are entitled to: a government work that carries no copyright, an open licence, or a written agreement with the publisher. The basis is recorded against each source and printed on every story page produced from it.
Those stories still carry the writer's name, the publisher's name, the original publication date and a link to the original. We did not report them and we do not present them as ours.
What we never do
- Reproduce anything from behind a paywall or a login.
- Present another publication's reporting as HUE's own work.
- Store the full text of a source we have no right to mirror.
- Strip a byline, a credit or a link to the original.
How our crawler behaves
- It identifies itself as
HUELegacyVenturesBot/1.0with a link to this page. - It reads publisher-provided RSS and Atom feeds, and fetches an article page only for the sources we are entitled to store in full.
- It sends
If-None-MatchandIf-Modified-Since, so an unchanged feed costs the publisher a 304 and nothing else. - It pauses between requests and runs on a schedule measured in hours, not seconds.
Photographs
Where we hold a story in full, its pictures are downloaded, stripped of metadata, re-encoded and served from huelv.com rather than hotlinked from the publisher's servers — hotlinking would spend their bandwidth without asking. Captions and photographer credits are carried across with the image; where a picture arrives with no credit, we attribute it to the publisher.
Editorial position
A story appearing here is not an endorsement, a recommendation, or investment advice. It means somebody at HUE thought it was worth reading. Where we add a note of our own it is labelled as ours and kept separate from the publisher's words.
