Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) is stepping up investments in its European manufacturing operations even as it targets €6 billion in annual savings by 2028. On September 11, reports emerged suggesting the company plans to spend $1.16 billion to enhance its manufacturing capacity in the region.

The reported investment is part of a €60 billion five-year strategic plan as the company seeks to boost growth and profitability.

Investment Drive

According to the reports, Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) plans to upgrade its manufacturing plant in Hordain, France, to improve efficiency. The company also intends to bring certain manufacturing processes currently outsourced to suppliers in-house. It also plans to enhance its research and development efforts as it eyes new vehicles.

Chief Executive Officer Antonio Filosa has already reiterated plans to roll out dozens of new models while also addressing overcapacity in some plants. Separately, Stellantis has confirmed more than €1 billion of investment at its Mulhouse plant to produce three new Peugeot electric and hybrid models beginning in 2029.

The investment would position the company to compete more effectively across both electric and hybrid segments while supporting its broader multi-energy strategy. It will also align with the broader strategy of maintaining multiple powertrain options for the European market.

Plans are also underway to rein in money-losing businesses as part of a cost-saving drive. Stellantis is also betting on strategic partnerships with the likes of Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology Co. and Dongfeng Motor Corp., with plans to share manufacturing capacity at plants in Spain and France to improve capacity utilization.

The restructuring drive responds to pressure from cheaper Chinese brands. Net income in the second quarter totaled €293 million, below analyst estimates of €464 million.

Investment Risks

While the $1.16 billion investment in France could strengthen Stellantis' manufacturing capabilities over the long term, the timing of production and its eventual financial contribution have not yet been publicly detailed. This leaves uncertainty around how quickly the project could turn into higher revenue or margins.

Additionally, Stellantis will have to contend with stiff competition to recoup significant returns from its investments. The company is already facing market pressure in Europe, a situation compounded by competitive Chinese EV manufacturers.

Hedge Fund Positioning and Short Interest

Hedge fund sentiment toward Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) weakened in the second quarter. The number of hedge funds holding STLA shares declined to 26 from 32 in the first quarter, according to the Insider Monkey Database.
