We’re excited to announce that Ana Maiques, co-founder and CEO of Neuroelectrics, will join us at the EU-Startups Summit 2027, taking place on May 13-14 in sunny Malta! Ana will deliver the keynote From European Innovation to Global Scale: Lessons from Neurotech
Ana is one of Europe’s leading figures at the intersection of entrepreneurship, neuroscience, and innovation. Through Neuroelectrics, she has spent more than a decade working towards an ambitious goal: developing technologies that can help us better understand, monitor, and interact with the human brain.
At the Summit, Ana will bring this combination of scientific innovation and entrepreneurial experience to the stage, sharing insights from building an international neurotechnology company, bringing complex science to market, and navigating the long journey from research and development to real-world clinical applications.
Her Story
Ana co-founded Neuroelectrics in Barcelona in 2011 alongside Giulio Ruffini. The company develops non-invasive technologies for brain monitoring and stimulation, combining neuroscience, physics, machine learning, hardware, and personalised brain modelling.
They raised a €15 million ($17.5 million) Series A in 2021, led by Morningside Ventures, to advance its non-invasive brain stimulation platform and clinical programmes in areas including epilepsy and depression. Its NeuroTwin initiative received around €4.49 million in EU funding to explore personalised brain models and non-invasive stimulation for neurological disorders.
Its international expansion is also notable. Neuroelectrics established a presence in the Boston/Cambridge life-sciences ecosystem in 2014 and today says its technologies are present in more than 74 countries across Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Australia.
Her entrepreneurial career, however, began before Neuroelectrics. Ana was also a co-founder of Starlab, the Barcelona-based research and innovation company from which Neuroelectrics emerged as a spin-off following work on advanced neuroscience technologies.
Alongside her work at Neuroelectrics, Ana has played an active role in the wider European innovation ecosystem. She has served on the European Innovation Council Advisory Board, became a Termeer Fellow through the Henri Termeer Foundation in 2018, and is a co-founder of EsTech, an organisation bringing together Spanish scale-ups and technology companies to support the growth of the country’s innovation ecosystem.
She is a strong advocate for increasing the representation of women in STEM, particularly by creating greater access to role models and opportunities in science and technology.
