Nvidia pledges $250 million in computing resources to boost UK AI safety research
U.S. chipmaker Nvidia has pledged $250 million worth of computing resources to Britain over five years to support artificial intelligence safety research, backing the country's ambition to become a global centre for AI governance and security, Reuters reported.

Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang announced on Wednesday that Britain would receive accelerated computing resources worth $50 million annually. The funding will focus on agentic AI safety testing and help researchers develop safeguards for increasingly powerful AI systems, Reuters reported.

Britain is seeking to establish a leading role in evaluating AI systems and managing the risks they pose, despite not being home to any major AI developers. Its efforts include the AI Security Institute, one of the world's first state-backed bodies established to assess the technology.

Scrutiny of AI safety has intensified as developers, including Anthropic and OpenAI, have disclosed instances of rogue or unintended behaviour by AI agents. Some industry figures have also warned that advanced AI could pose an existential threat to humanity.

British AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said Nvidia's contribution would help ensure that future AI systems were safe, secure and aligned with people's interests.

The pledge comes amid growing international efforts to establish safeguards for advanced AI technology. Microsoft President Brad Smith said in an interview on Monday that Britain was well positioned to help lead the development of AI safety guidelines, according to Reuters.

Nvidia's contribution will support several British research initiatives focused on developing safer and more reliable AI systems. These include BOLD, led by the University of Oxford, which is developing approaches to help AI systems learn, adapt and operate alongside people.

The funding will also support robotics safety research at Imperial College London and programmes at University College London.

The investment is expected to strengthen links between British research institutions and the computing resources needed to test increasingly capable AI systems, as governments and technology companies face mounting pressure to address potential risks while advancing AI development, Reuters said in the report.
