CATL signs deal with Germany's Intilion to deploy 3 GWh of sodium-ion storage over 5 years
  • The companies plan to deploy Tener Sodium energy storage systems in markets including Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
  • The agreement marks another step in CATL's European sodium-ion storage commercialization push, following partnerships with Alfen and Solarpro.

CATL (HKEX: 3750) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with German energy storage solutions provider Intilion to deploy 3 GWh of sodium-ion energy storage systems in Europe over the next 5 years.

The world's largest battery supplier announced the partnership on Wednesday, saying the companies would introduce its Tener Sodium energy storage systems in markets including Germany, Switzerland and Austria for grid-scale, commercial and industrial applications.

The agreement builds on CATL's push into European sodium-ion storage this year and extends its existing project partnership with Intilion to a new battery technology.

The companies have deployed more than 30 energy storage projects in Germany since 2022 and will promote the large-scale adoption of multiple battery technologies, including sodium-ion and lithium-ion, in Europe, CATL said.

Designed for Europe's harsh winter conditions, the Tener Sodium system offers a cycle life of more than 15,000 cycles and 25 years of stable operation, while maintaining high discharge power at -20°C (-4°F), according to CATL.

These features can support frequency regulation on European power grids and the long-term stability of energy storage systems, the company said.

CATL unveiled Tener Sodium on June 22, describing it as the world's first field-validated sodium-ion energy storage solution. The system has a modular design that allows storage duration to be configured to suit project requirements.

The system is dimensionally compatible with lithium-ion batteries. CATL previously said the design gives customers greater flexibility in choosing battery technologies and reduces their exposure to lithium price volatility.

Before the latest agreement, CATL signed an MOU in July with European new energy integrator Alfen N.V. to deploy 5 GWh of sodium-ion energy storage systems in Western European countries, including the Netherlands, starting in 2027.

That same month, the company signed a 2 GWh Tener Sodium energy storage cooperation agreement with Eastern European renewable energy company Solarpro, further expanding its regional partnerships.

In China, CATL signed a 3-year supply agreement in April with energy storage system provider HyperStrong for 60 GWh of sodium-ion batteries for energy storage.

The partnerships come as Europe's energy storage market expands rapidly. European lithium-ion energy storage battery shipments reached 72.7 GWh in the first half of 2026, up 74% year-on-year, according to South Korean market research firm SNE Research.

Over the same period, CATL's global lithium-ion energy storage battery shipments rose 81% year-on-year to 125.0 GWh, giving it the leading market share of 27.1%.
