Taiwan yesterday thanked German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for underscoring the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the remarks a day after Merz and Takaichi met at a leaders’ summit in Japan, at which they issued a joint statement voicing “strong opposition” to any unilateral attempts to change the “status quo” by force or coercion anywhere in the world.

They also reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and encouraged the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues.

Germany and Japan would facilitate cooperation in defense, economic security and advanced technology to overcome the two countries’ common geopolitical and economic challenges, they said.

The ministry cited Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) as saying that Taiwan is deeply thankful for the statement from the two leaders, who have long voiced concern and support for maintaining cross-strait peace.

Peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is vitally important to regional security and the world’s prosperity, as the nation is a key link in global supply chains and logistics, the ministry said.

Taiwan continues to pursue the strategy of integrated diplomacy to further cooperation across multiple domains with like-minded countries, such as Germany and Japan, in defense of a free and rules-based international order, it said.

The nation maintains its long-time policy of contributing to global peace, stability and economic development, it added.
