Three key strategic aspects of To Lam’s upcoming official visit to Japan

First, leaders of the two countries will jointly charter long-term cooperation orientations and priority areas of cooperation that meet the development needs of both sides in the new period.

Second, both countries will move beyond economic, trade and investment cooperation towards strengthening linkages between their economies, with greater emphasis on partnership, co-creation, and enhancing each country's economic autonomy and resilience.

Third, the visit is expected to generate momentum for breakthroughs in the fields of science and technology, innovation, and the transformation of development models that are particular importance to the future of the bilateral relations.

Japan has strengths in technology, capital, management experience and manufacturing, while Viet Nam has a young workforce, a dynamic market, development potential and a strong determination to promoting innovation, shared Nguyen.

The combination of these strengths would open up numerous cooperation opportunities for both sides in strategic technology, digital transformation, green transition, energy and high-quality human resource development, enabling Viet Nam to acquire and master technologies, strengthen its domestic capabilities and promote the long-term competitiveness of its economy.

According to the Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Vu, besides meetings with the Emperor and Empress, the Prime Minister, and the Presidents of Japan's House of Councilors and House of Representatives, To Lam is expected to hold meetings with leaders of Japanese economic organizations and major corporations; attend and deliver remarks at the Viet Nam-Japan public-private forum on economic and science and technology cooperation; and visit a Japanese high-tech companies.

These activities are of practical significance in strengthening connections and fostering cooperation opportunities, particularly in areas of importance to the long-term development of both countries, he added.

Remarkable progress in Viet Nam-Japan relations

Looking back on more than 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties and three years since the relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Nguyen noted that the relations between Viet Nam and Japan have made remarkable progress, becoming increasingly comprehensive, substantive and effective.

The bilateral ties rest on an exceptionally solid foundation, underpinned by three important factors: high political trust, growing economic interdependence, and closer people-to-people ties, paving the way for the two sides to further elevate their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to a new level, emphasized the Deputy Foreign Minister.

Remarkably, a growing number of Japanese companies in high-tech sectors, particularly AI, are expanding their operations in Viet Nam.

Cooperation in energy security and green transformation, especially projects under the framework of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), is also being actively promoted by both sides.

Science and technology and innovation have become new pillars of bilateral cooperation, he underlined, adding that the two countries have been implementing a range of practical cooperation initiatives, from joint research and semiconductor workforce training to cooperation in space technology, while also seeking to bolstering collaboration emerging fields such as AI and quantum technology.

To date, Viet Nam and Japan have established more than 100 partnerships between localities. In 2026 alone, more than 10 large-scale festivals have been held in the two countries, contributing to greater mutual understanding, cultural exchanges and friendship between their peoples.

Notably, the community of nearly 700,000 Vietnamese people living, studying and working in Japan has become an important bridge, helping strengthen ties between the two countries and their peoples.

Building on these achievements, Nguyen expressed his belief that both nations would continue to uphold the spirit of trust, sincerity and mutual benefit, steering bilateral relations towards deeper political trust, closer economic cooperation, greater breakthroughs in science and technology, and stronger bonds between their peoples./.
